Congress Launch in London

On Monday January 20 a Congress Launch was held at the Australia House in London. The launch was sponsored by SCIENCE and hosted by the International Managing Editor for the journal, Dr. Andrew Sugden. Antony Barrington-Brown, who took the iconic image of Watson and Crick with their DNA model in 1953 was the special guest speaker at the launch.

Eight Nobel Laureates to Participate in Congress

The remarkable lineup of special guests and speakers at the 2003 Genetics Congress includes eight Nobel Laureates - Sydney Brenner, Peter Doherty, Robert Horvitz, H. Gobind Khorana, John Sulston, Susumu Tonegawa, James D. Watson and Eric Wieschaus.

Australia’s leading television current affairs journalist, Kerry O’Brien, will interview James D. Watson during the opening ceremony of the Genetics Congress.

Botstein Wins Prize
The Peter Gruber Foundation has announced that the Genetics Prize for 2003 will be awarded to Professor David Botstein of Stanford University. Professor Botstein will address the Congress on Tuesday July 8 and the Prize consisting of a medal and a cheque for $150,000 (US) will be presented at a ceremony to be held on Thursday July 10.

Watson and Crick Portrait Sold for $13,000 (AUS)
Watson & Crick The online auction for an autographed copy of the classic 1953 image of Watson and Crick with their DNA Model was sold for $13,000 (Aus) at the conclusion of an online auction conducted on this web site. The archive quality print was signed by James D. Watson, Francis Crick and Antony Barrington-Brown, the photographer. Profits from the auction are being used to support the participation of delegates from developing nations in the Congress.

Drosophila Conference
In March Adriana Meregalli and Philip Batterham joined over 1500 delegates at the annual Drosophila Research Conference held at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in Chicago. The sub-zero temperatures of Chicago provided a contrast to the weather expected for the Great Barrier Reef Drosophila Conference to be held after the Congress.
