Mr. Micklos joined Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 1982, founding its
public affairs and development departments. In 1988, he founded
the DNA Learning Center (DNALC) in 1988 as the world’s first science
center devoted to genetics education. His textbook DNA Science helped
catalyze the movement to bring hands-on experiments with DNA into American
high
school and beginning college classrooms. Recently, he has
focused on developing Internet resources for biology education. The Internet
sites
of the DNALC – including DNA from the Beginning, Your
Genes-Your Health, Image Archive on the American Eugenics Movement, Genetic
Origins,
and DNA Interactive – receive four million visitors per
year. Mr. Micklos' work is supported by major grants from the National
Institutes
of Health, National Science Foundation, and Howard Hughes
Medical Institute. In 1990, he received the Charles A. Dana Award for
Pioneering Achievement
in Higher Education. Currently, he is collaborating with
a number of organizations to expand the DNALC concept to other sites
in the U.S.,
Europe, and Asia.
