Opening Ceremony & Welcome Reception

John Batman TheatreSunday 6 July 7.30pm - 10.00pm
Venue: John Batman Theatre, Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre

Opening Ceremony

Sponsored by Varian Inc

The Opening Ceremony will consist of three parts:-

Part 1: Genomes -The Linkage to Life

The philosopher Joseph Campbell spent a lifetime drawing parallels between the various mythologies, religions and fables that have been handed down to us through the generations. No matter what the source, they all tell a 'story' of the origin of life, of life itself, and death - with some tales to punctuate and garnish that journey. As it is with science, these 'stories' attempt to find order in the chaos that is life. Our opening ceremony will showcase varying mythologies and beliefs, performed by the cream of Melbourne's multi-cultural entertainers, and marry those beliefs with the story of DNA - the molecule of life.

Part 2: Welcome and Official Opening

Messages of welcome will be brought by Dr. Jim Peacock (President of the XIX International Congress of Genetics) and Professor Shouyuan Zhao (President of the International Genetics Federation). The Congress will be opened by the Honourable Steve Bracks (Premier of the State of Victoria)

Part 3: Interview with James D. Watson

James D. Watson will be interviewed on stage by Kerry O'Brien.
